Eating disorders are characterized by a persistent disturbance in eating behavior. A pursuit of thinness that is relentless and that involves behaviors that result in a significantly low body weight. Amenorrhea is not a requirement for diagnosis , although it is a common symptom. Charles lasegue and sir william gull independently describe the clinical syndrome in 1873. Limit the quantity of food consumed, tightly control caloric intake. Try to avoid eating in the presence of others. When at the table, they may eat excessively slowly, cut food into very small pieces, or dispose of food secretly. Binge: an out-of-control consumption of an amount of food that is far greater than what most people would eat in the same amount of time under the same circumstances. Purge: remove the food they have eaten from their bodies. Patients often revere those with restrictive type- indicative of the disordered thinking. Must be thin, eating is bad kind of thinking.
