o World Health Organization definition:
“Health is a state of complete physical, mental, and social

infirmity.”
o Health: A state of complete social, mental, and physical well-
being
o Illness: A disease or period of sickness impacting the body or
mind
o Health depends on social and environmental factors as well as
biology and lifestyle
o US last in most categories, but has gained 30 years in life
expectancy over the last century
o Three indicators of the success and quality of a country’s
health-care system:
Cost of care
Infant mortality
Life expectancy
