Germany granted animals a constitutional right: following protests by activists mcdonalds and burger king forced significant improvements in the way the us meat industry slaughters animals. Humans don"t need to kill other creatures in order to survive; animals do. Giving up our specism will bring us to a moral cliff from which we may not be prepared to jump even when logic is pushing us. Pain: question of whether we owe animals that can feel pain any moral consideration, and this seems impossible to deny. Factory animals: laying hen piled together with 6 other hens in a small wire cage. Domestication: domestication is evolutionary, opportunistic species discovered through darwinian trial and error that they were more likely to survive and prosper in an alliance with humans than on their own. Vegetarianism/veganism: farmers would point out that even vegans have a serious clash of interests with other animals.
