Chapter 5- civil rights (pages 118-153: what are civil rights, civil rights and civil liberties. Equality was not ensured in the constitution, it was not something that the founders were concerned with. Legal restrictions on civil rights: slavery, in 1808 when congress stopped the slave trade from africa, almost 1 million slaves were in population in the united states. The missouri compromise in 1820 banned slaves in territories north of the southern border. The compromise of 1850 allowed territories in the mx-u. s. war to decide if they want slavery. Depression: 60 percent of those expelled in the mexican repatriation were u. s. citizens, asian americans, in 1879 california prohibited chinese from voting and employing in state government. Congress responded with the civil rights act of 1866, which guaranteed the freedmen to make contracts, sue in court if those contracts were violated, and own.
