The virus had claimed the lives of 4,000 of its citizens and more than 11,000 west africans overall. In the united states, where just four cases were diagnosed, the only death involved a health care worker who had contracted the virus abroad and was brought here for treatment. Still, ebola dominated front pages and cable news network coverage throughout the fall of 2014. Researchers at rutgers university reported that news consumers who told pollsters they were following developments about ebola very closely were more misinformed about the disease than respondents who said they were following the story somewhat closely. The rutgers-eagleton poll suggested the more ebola news respondents consumed, the more likely they were to mistakenly believe the deadly fever is easily spread.
