Psychological disorder/abnormal behavior: psychological dysfunction associated with distress or impairment in functioning that is not a typical and or culturally expected response. Mental health professionals function as scientist-practitioners: consumer of science, keep up with latest developments in field, evaluator of science, see if their own treatments work, creator of science, conduct research. Studying psychological disorders: clinical description, causation (etiology, treatment & outcome. Prevalence: number of people displaying a disorder in the total population at any given time. Incidence: number of new cases of a disorder appearing during a specific period. Course: pattern of development and change of a disorder over time: chronic, episodic, time-limited. Prognosis: predicted course/development of a disorder over time. Symptoms were identified with sin of acedia, or sloth by churches. The biological tradition: hippocrates & galen, humoral theory, syphilis, cured, grey said mental illnesses should be treated like physical ones. Catharsis: rapid or sudden release of emotional tension through to be an important factor in psychoanalytical therapy.
