Document Summary
Problem solving - person has a goal and tries to figure out how to reach that goal. Problem solving as a process of research, as though you are seeking a path toward your goal. Problem space - the set of all states that can be reached in solving the problem. You somehow need to narrow your search through a problem space. If you don"t consider every option, you might miss the best option. What you need is a problem-solving heuristic. Hill-climbing strategy - at each point of decision, you simply choose the option that moves you in the direction of your goal. However, many problems require that you briefly move away from your goal. Means-end analysis - compare your current state to the goal state and then ask what you need to do to make them more alike. Pictures and diagrams are also helpful tools in problem-solving.
