Document Summary

Representation - the storage of information in long-term memory when that information is not in use. In the case of visual imagery, activating that information means creating a visual image. Once it is activated, we can inspect it and make decisions about it. Representation means the format in which we maintain these visual images between the time we perceived them and the time we remember them, forming a mental image. When we retrieve these representations, we then experience mental imagery. Analog representation - the theory that we store visual images in a manner similar to actual pictures. Propositional representation - the theory that we store visual images in terms of a language-like code. Equivalent to a list of features, like visual descriptions of the image. Our imagery system then recreates an image in visual working memory. Shepard and metzler"s (1971) mental rotation experiment - an experiment on visual imagery that showed that representation is analog.
