Soc 248- reading notes- sernau ch 7 democracy and human rights. From bands to states: band=small group of people working and traveling together. Ie hunter-gatherers: decisions are collective, when group settles down to tend gardens, pratice horticulture or raise animals (pastoralism) band leadership=more difficult, often governed as tribes, recognized leaders, elders. Indonesia made new flag and new language: centralization of economy, schools mandated to teach common identity, homogenize culture, creating identity can be brutal. The age of democracy: democracy-rule by the people. Charles said if he wasn"t elected he would continue to kill. The price of democracy: task f 20th century= make world safe for democracy, task of 21st= make democracy safe for the world, turmoil of post wwii made it so poor countries needed a strong hand, development- oriented dictator. Commision: hearing stories of torture and repression and small acts of kindness, south african experiment: to expose, forgive, vow never again, and go forward.
