Personal space- the invisible, variable volume of space surrounding an individual that deines that individual"s preferred distance from others. Proxemics- the study of people"s use of space as a special elaboraion of culture. Threat threshold- the hypotheical outer boundary of inimate space; a breach by an uninvited other occasions ight or light. Arousal, relaional- a heightened state of awareness, oriening response, or mental alertness that simulates a review of the relaionship. Expectancy- what people predict will happen, rather than what they desire. Violaion valence- the perceived posiive or negaive value assigned to a breach of expectaions, regardless of who the violator is. Communicator reward valence- the sum of posiive and negaive atributes brought to the encounter plus the potenial to reward or punish in the future. Interacion adaptaion theory- a systemaic analysis of how people, adjust their approach when another"s behavior doesn"t mesh with what"s needed, anicipated, or preferred.
