Rank societies little unequal access to economic resources or power, but do have social groups with unequal access to prestige. Potlatches communal feasts among pacific nw native americans where large amounts of food were given to the guests in order to gain prestige for the host. Leaders/chiefs enjoy special prestige and social deference is shown towards them.
