Socially stratified modern post-industrial and industrial societies contain social groups that have unequal access to important advantages such as economic resources, power, and prestige. Economic resources things that have value in a culture: land, tools, technology, goods, money. Power ability to make others do what they do not want to do; influence based on threat of force. Contain no social groups with greater or lesser access to resources, prestige, and power. Not socially stratified, number of prestigious positions is adjusted to fit the number of qualified candidates. Rights and privileges differentiated only within families. Rank societies little unequal access to economic resources or power, but do have social groups with unequal access to prestige. Potlatches communal feasts among pacific nw native americans where large amounts of food were given to the guests in order to gain prestige for the host. Leaders/chiefs enjoy special prestige and social deference is shown towards them.
