Document Summary

August 31st, chapter 1: evolution, the themes of biology, and scientific inquiry. Biology: 1. 1 the study of life reveals common themes. Themes: organization, information, energy and matter, interactions, evolution. Emergent properties: allows us to see novel properties emerge at each level that are absent from the proceeding, they are due to the arrangement and interactions of parts as complexity increases. Ex: photosynthesis occurs in chloroplasts but will not take place in a test tube mixture of chloropyll and other chloroplast molecules because the process of photosynthesis requires a specific organization of all compontents. The cell: an organisms basic unit of structure and function. Recognize 2 main forms of cells: prokaryotic and eukaryotic. Prokaryotic cells: the cells of two groups of single celled organisms micro organisms bacteria and archea. Lacks a nucleus or other membrane enclosed organelles, and is smaller than eukaryotic cells. Eukaryotic cells: all other life forms including plants are composed of eukaryotic cells.
