Conversations flow smoothly because of frequently recurring patterns. We communicate almost thoughtlessly because of well practiced actions. Conversations proceed as if we follow a script to a play. Observed fans" spontaneity at a basketball game. Fans seemed to follow a script during the basketball game. Patterns are not always predictable; people disrupt patterns. When patterns are disrupted, people begin to question why. Smooth flow of pairing = moving through conversations without much thought. Disrupted patterns = conversation coming into question. Adjacency-pair structures understood as rule-governed or normative organization . Lack of response after an accusation can be taken as admission of guilt or attempted avoidance. Comm. creates realities, values, and common habits of relating. Sometimes we have natural patterns of saying things that are troublesome repeatedly. You are in a highly predictable situation where you feel that you must say or do something even though you know it will set off an unpleasant, undesirable pattern of interaction.
