Ancient rome - brain is like a pump ; brain controlled bodily movements by pumping animal spirits through the body"s nerves (pipes) 19th century - like an energy system; different parts of the brain store mental energy and use it to power behavior. Second half of 20th century - like a computer; analogous to computer hardware and the mind"s beliefs and skills were similar to computer software. The brain is like the internet; power of both comes fro interconnections among large numbers of parts. How the brain is like a tool - rom harre - use the brain to do the jobs of everyday life. You are responsible for executing the job. Brain changes when you perform a task repeatedly, just like your muscles grow the more you use them - the changes make it easier for you to do that task in the future.
