CHE 201 Chapter Notes - Chapter 4: Ionic Compound, Strong Electrolyte, Chemical Equation
Document Summary
Solutions: a homogenous mixture of two or more substances. (solvent & solute) Solvent: a substance in a solution that is present in the largest amount. Solute: the dissolved substance in a solution. Aqueous solution: solution in which water is the solvent. Ions are stabilized by the solvent (hydration: ions are surrounded by water molecules) Ionic compounds & acids and bases: strong electrolyte, an electrolyte that dissociates completely, which means that all the dissolved compound exists in the form of ions, all water soluble ionic compounds, acids (molecular compound) Ionize completely, resulting in a solution that contains hydrogen ions and the corresponding anion, no acid molecules. Sulfuric acid: weak electrolytes, a compound that produces ions upon dissolving but exists in solution predominantly as molecules that are not ionized, molecular compounds that are electrolyte, most acids are weak electrolytes except for the table above. Bases are weak also (consist of a nitrogen atom bonded to a hydrogen or/and a carbon).
