Some of these thoughts we store temporarily in a preconscious area, from which we can retrieve them into conscious awareness. We repress or forcibly block from consciousness because they would be too unsettling to acknowledge. These feelings and ideas lurking outside our awareness can powerfully influence us, sometimes gaining expression in disguised forms the work we choose, the beliefs we hold, our daily habits, our troubling symptoms.
