Document Summary

Chapter 7: the courts the state court system pages 210-214. The general court was a combined legislature and court that made laws, held trials, and imposed sentences. By 1776, all of the american colonies had established fully functioning court systems. Original jurisdiction is the lawful authority of a court to hear or to act on a case from its beginning and to pass judgement on the law and the facts. The authority may be over a specific geographic area or over particular types of cases. Appellate jurisdiction is the lawful authority of a court to review a decision made by a lower court. By the late nineteenth century, a dramatic increase in population, growing urbanization, the settlement of the west, and other far-reaching changes in the american way of life led to a tremendous increase in civil litigation and criminal arrests.
