Document Summary

Succession- change and replacement in plant and animals communities in an area following disturbance. Primary succession: on newly exposed geological substrates in areas that have not previously supported life. Secondary s succession- occurs in areas where disturbance destroys a community without destroying the soil. ex forest fire, or after agriculture lands are abandoned. Climax community: succession generally ends whose population remains stable until disrupted by disturbance. Late succession community that remains in equilibrium stable until disrupted disturbance. Community changes during succession include increases in species diversity and changes in species composition. Concept ecological succession usually increases in species diversity as well as changes in species composition. Reiners studied changes in plant diversity as well as changes in species composition. Retreating glaciers lefty newly exposed rock over a1500 year period. The total number of plant species in the eight study sites increased with plot age species richness.
