KINS 1223 Chapter Notes - Chapter 1: Feedback, Negative Feedback, Dynamic Equilibrium
Document Summary
Chapter 1: major themes of anatomy and physiology (pgs. Homeostasis: the body"s ability to detect change, acivate opposing mechanisms, and maintain relaively stable internal condiions. Pathophysiology: the study of unstable condiions that result when our homeostaic controls go awry. Internal condiions are not constant, but instead luctuate within a range or certain set point (dynamic equilibrium) Negaive feedback: a process in which the body senses a change and acivates mechanisms that negate or reverse it (oten called feedback loops) Example: when the body"s temperature is too high, vasodilaion occurs in order to put the blood"s heat closer to the surface of the body. Example: when the body"s temperature is too low, vasoconstricion occurs in order to maintain the body"s heat. Feedback loop components: receptor, integraing (control center), and the efector. Posiive feedback: self-amplifying cycle in which a physiological change leads to an even greater change in the same direcion; oten a normal way of producing rapid change.
