KINS 1224 Chapter Notes - Chapter 28: Theca Of Follicle, Granulosa Cell, Follicular Phase
Document Summary
It"s the same as spermatogenesis it produces a haploid gamete by means of meiosis. The ovary will only release one egg per month. The first germ cells arise from the embryonic yolk sac. They migrate to the gonadal ridges in the first 5-6 weeks of development and then differentiate into oogonia. The oogonia multiply into the millions and then some transform into primary oocytes and go as far as meiosis. By 6 months after birth no oogonia remain beyond that time. Atresia- most primary oocytes undergo a process of generation called atresia before a girl is born. By puberty only 400,000 remain this is the female"s lifetime supply of gametes. The egg development resumes in adolescent, when fsh stimulates monthly cohorts of oocytes to complete meiosis i. This stage produces two daughter cells, a large one called the secondary oocyte and a much smaller one called first polar body. The polar body sometimes undergoes meiosis ii but ultimately disintegrates.
