Chapter 7: learning and the development of expertise. Performance- observable and measurable outcome of executing a motor skill. Learning- defined as a relatively permanent change in one"s capability, not necessarily the actual performance. Can"t assess learning because its internal, can assess performance and infer from there. Performance curve- illustrates the change in performance after time. Retention tests- given after a interval of no practice to see if performance is still elevated. Transfer tests-assess motor skill performance in a context different from that in which the motor skill was practiced, test the stability or adaptability of the skill: i. e. Closed skill in open environment or different types of performance feedback. Plateaus- areas where there"s little to no improving, challenging for learner and instructor: must find why the plateau occurred and if it reflects both learning and performance or just performance, caused by learner, instructor, and tasked based factors.
