Perioperative nursing used to involve the care of clients before, during, and after surgery. An important aspect of the perioperative nursing role is to help prevent complications of surgery. (hand hygiene) Surgical site infections after certain elective procedures. Verify their identity before leaving the preoperative area. Take a time out before starting with all team members before starting the procedure. Nursing care focuses on identifying existing health concerns, planning for intraoperative and postoperative needs, and providing preoperative teaching. Classifying surgeries to help identify perioperative needs. Body systems to help identify risk of infections. Palliative- to relieve discomfort or symptoms without producing cure. Transplant- replaces a malfunctioning body part, tissue, or organ. The patient"s age, general health, and personal habits can contribute to increased risk during any surgical procedure. Focus is to reduce hospital stats and contain costs. However, it increases the need for pt education, discharge planning, preparation for self-care, and referral for home care and rehabilitation services.
