Single Subject Research
Characteristic research design in behavior analysis
Both experimental & applied
Does not always equal an N=1
Even when it does, the amount of data collection is immense
Demonstrate relationship between DV & IV through graphic display & visual
Not statistical inference or explanation
Experimental Control
The goal of behavior analytic research
When a graphic display demonstrates experimental control we can reliability say
the change in the behavior (the DV) is the result of the environmental
manipulation (the IV)
The change must be predictable, reliable, and repeatable
The quantitative result of deliberate, planned, and usually controlled observation
Data are collected on any behavior of interest
Data are broken into a planned segment of time and displayed graphically
The visual depiction of the data
Major tool for organizing, storing, interpreting, and communicating results
Benefits of Graphic Display
1) Provides immediate information
2) Immediate analysis of variation
3) Allows judgmental analysis
4) Conservative method
5) Encourages independent judgment
6) Displays relationship between DV & IV
The line Graph
Parts of the Graph
Horizontal Axis
Also referred to as the X-Axis
Straight, horizontal line
Represents the passage of time
Demonstrates the repeated measure across time
Second, minutes, hours, sessions, days, months, etc.
Parts of the Graph
Vertical Axis
Or Y-Axis
Abicissa and ordinate
Demonstrates the dependent measure
What you are collecting data on
Could be frequency, duration, percentage, etc.
Parts of the Graph
Phase Change Line and Condition Labels
Phase change line
