Document Summary

Chapter 6 analytic epidemiology: types of study designs. Analytic studies lead to the prevention of disease. Another contribution of analytic epidemiology is the creation of quantitative evaluations of intervention programs. Ecologic studies- are study in which the units of analysis are populations or groups of people rather than individuals. Ecologic comparison study- involves an assessment of the association between exposure rates and disease rates during the same time period. In an ecologic study, information about both exposures (explanatory variables) and outcomes is collected at the group level. Ecological fallacy- information obtained from the group level data may not accurately reflect the relations between exposure and outcomes in the individual level. The term ecological fallacy is defined as an erroneous inference that may occur because an association observed between variables on an aggerate level does not necessarily represent or reflect the association that exists an individual level. May provide information about the context of health.
