SOC 0851 Chapter Notes - Chapter 3: Liberal Feminism
Sex Difference Research
• Sex difference research – stands clearly within the individualist approach
because its concern is identifying whether a wide range of traits,
dispositions, and behaviors differ significantly between men and women
• Differences in cognitive abilities between the sexes can be grouped into
three domains: mathematical abilities, verbal abilities, and visuospatial
abilities
o These differences are then generally presumed to be
iutale ad ieitale
• Liberal feminism holds that men and women are essentially the same
and that any sense of difference is created by laws and other societal
structures that prevent women from having access to the same
opportunities as men
o Sex difference would demonstrate the lack of any important
differences and prove that these differences are created by the
structures of society, structures that can be changed. False.
o There were fewer differences between men and women than
many people had expected and the magnitude of those
differences was relatively small
• Small average differences between men and women that have been
demonstrated cannot be ignored
• Some researchers suggest that a more productive area of research would
be to investigate gender similarities rather than sex differences
