State- an independent political entity that controls a geographical territory with clear boundaries and that defends itself from external threats with an army from internal disorder with police. Political anthropologists- answer questions like, could it be that power was successfully institutionalized in these societies in forms other than the state? . Politics- the ways in which power relations affect human social affairs. Individualism- is based on a view of human nature that sees individuals as the primordial natural units in the human world. Agency- the ability to act or to have a voice. Ecology- the study of the relationships among living organisms and their environments. Ecological anthropology- the study of human populations in terms of the wider ecological contexts to which they must adapt to survive. Cultural ecology- (julian steward) focuses on the way specific, often small-scale societies use culture to fashion adaptations to particular local ecological settings.
