Document Summary

Each other and to the other parent cell. Chromosomes-the structures that contain most of the cell"s dna. Asexual reproduction- does not involve fertilization of an egg by a sperm. The lone parent and each of its offspring have identical genes. Mitosis- the type of cell division responsible for asexual reproduction and for the growth and maintenance of multicellular organisms. Sexual reproduction- requires fertilization of an egg by a sperm. Meiosis- special type of cell division only for reproductive organs. Contains one very long dna molecule, thousands of genes. Chromatin- fibers composed of roughly equal amounts of dna and protein molecules. Dna packing: histones attach to the dna. Nucleosome- consists of dna wound around several histone molecules: when preparing to dive, chromosomes condense into the beaded string itself wraps, loops and folds into a tight and compact structure. Before a cell begins the division process, it must therefore duplicate all of its chromosomes.
