Bow- a wooden stick with horsehair stretched to make a legato sound when played. Violin- highest in pitch, smallest in size (soprano) Viola- a bigger violin with a fuller/lower pitch (alto) Cello- much bigger than violins and viola with a deeper sound (tenor) Double bass- biggest string with lowest pitch (bass) *the bigger the hollow body, the deeper the sound it is capable of producing. Pizzicato- playing a bowed string instrument by plucking the strings. Plucked string instruments- harp, guitar (acoustic, electric, bass) Piccolo- very small with very high pitch range. Flute- operates like a piccolo, just a little deeper and larger. Oboe- played through a double reed (two pieces of cane that vibrate) Bassoon- massive double-reed woodwind with a very low, full sound. Saxophone- more similar to a brass but has a single reed in the mouthpiece. *all woodwinds can have their pitches altered by opening and closing finger holes.
