PSC 321 Chapter Notes - Chapter N/A: The Need
Document Summary
If you had nothing, food would be the first thing you desire, because it is a basic need: mainly, food. The need for physical well-being, a semblance of order and justness. The need for the respect of others and high self regard. The desire for fulfillment, to achieve one"s potential. Directing the efforts of people to fit the needs of the organization. Persuading people to fit the needs of the organization. Hard and soft management approaches each have flaws. *a satisfied need is not a motivator of behavior. Physiological and safety needs are not effective motivators. Social needs are, but management often sees these things as a threat. Ego needs relate to self esteem and reputation; very few opportunities to satisfy these needs at lower levels of employment. People are not by nature passive, but as an adaptation to an organization. People already have the desire to fill the needs of the organization; management exposes them.
