Evidence shows that people were deliberately breeding animals (horses) and plants (the date palm tree) for desirable characteristics as long as 5,000 years ago. Breed the best to the best and hope for the best . Proposed that gametes contained hereditary determinants that blended when the gametes fuse during fertilization. 2 different determinants lost their individuality after blending and could never be separated. Smooth, round seed plant + wrinkled seed plant = round and wrinkled seed plant. Proposed that each determinant had a physically distinct nature. When gametes fuse in fertilization, determinants remain intact. Round seeds + wrinkled seeds = doesn"t matter but still contains determinants for. Mendel used the scientific method to test his hypothesis. Mendel used the garden pea because it"s easy to grow, has a short generational span, and it"s feasible of making controlled crosses. Pea flowers make both male and female sex organs: stamens and pistils produce gametes.
