Sylvester colligan: have a problem with his knee. Went to moseley for surgery and colligan believed he had a surgery to x his knee. But in reality the surgeon only gave colligan anesthesia, made some cuts around colligan"s knee that looked like surgical incisions: placebo: inactive substance/condition that may cause participants to improve/ change because of their belief in the placebo"s ef cacy. Those who received the sham surgery reported the same level of knee pain and functioning as those who received the real surgical treatment: a belief in the effectiveness of a treatment boosts the treatment"s effectiveness. The placebo in treatment and research: strong placebo effects can pose a problem for scientists trying to evaluate if a new treatment is effective. Treatment and the placebo: big pills are more effective than little ones, and colored pills work better than white tablets.
