Document Summary

Drugs have been a part of society throughout human history: drugs and culture. Which drugs people use and which substances they define as helpful and harmful vary from society to society and over time. Drug use and especially addiction can lead to codependency among family members and friends. Parental addiction harms children, who are more likely to use drugs themselves, to drop out of school, and to get in trouble with the law. Drugs play a part in many cases of child neglect and family violence: homelessness. Drug and alcohol use is common among the homeless. Although some people become homeless because they abuse drugs, other turn to drugs and alcohol as a means of escape from the stresses of living on the streets: health problems. Drug abuse can damage the brain, liver, and other vital organs and lead to malnutrition. Among pregnant women, drug abuse increases the risk of premature delivery and birth defects.
