BSCI 170 Chapter Notes - Chapter 1: Archaea, Positive Feedback, Reductionism
Document Summary
Evolution- process of change that has transformed life on earth from its earliest beginnings to the diversity of organisms living today: adaptions in different specimens- i. e magnolia tree, are the result of evolution. Emergent properties- arrangement and interactions of parts of parts as complexity increases- bike parts aren"t the same as a working bike- same idea with broader categories in bio. Reductionism- reduction of complex systems into similar compounds. Eukariyotic cell- subdivided int internal membranes and various organelles- largest organelle is most often times the nucleus, contains dna- organelles located in the cytoplasm- region between nucleus and outer membrane. Prokaryiotic cell- dna is not seperate and floats around cell- lack other organelles as well. Dna- each chromosome has one long dna molecule with hundreds to thousands of genes- dna is central database: made up of two nucleotides, forms double helix. Genome- entire library of genetic instrcutions that organisms inherit.
