How families form, expand, contract, dissolve, and are maintained. Marriage: socially acknowledged and approved (often legal) union of two people so they can live together and have/adopt children. Marriage between two people (man and wife, lesbians, gays) Polygyny: single husband with many wives. Polyandry: single wife with many husbands. Marriage to someone who has similar characteristics in terms of religion, race, ethnicity, education level, social class, etc. Marriage to someone who does not has similar characteristics in terms of religion, race, ethnicity, education level, social class, etc. Increased recently: partners have a close, person, and domestic relationships with one another, usually results from a courtship and the development of intimacy over a dating period, women tend to be emotional caretakers within heterosexual relationships. Sudden, onset, inspires strong sexual feelings, tends to include idealization of the one who is loved. More gradual development, not necessarily tied to sexual passion, based on a more rational assessment of who is loved.
