Social psychology: study of how people behave in social situations, explaining behavior, how social situations can influence thoughts, feelings, behaviors of an individual. How it started: figuring out why we are so cruel to each other, abu ghraib prison. Guards mistreating prisoners at start of war on terror: zimbardo prison study. Comparing disciplines: social psych = how people engage with other people in different situations, personality psych = thought of people as fixed, stable traits. Focuses on differences b/w individuals thoughts, feelings and behaviors. Focuses on inidivdual self: cognitive psych = how people think, sociology = behavior of groups, not individuals. Power of the situation: situation determines behavior, social psych started post ww2 figuring out why people would murder others, nazi germany. Milgram experiment: people shocking other people study, if they get something wrong, you shock the other person except other person is fake and pretending to be shocked.
