PSY 210 Chapter Notes - Chapter 9: Normative Social Influence, Social Proof, Asch Conformity Experiments
Document Summary
Example of social influence = fashion trends, tattoos becoming more common. 3 ways to describe social influence: conformity. Changing behavior in response to real (or imagined) pressure from others. Eg. fashion trends such as throwing away old jeans not in style anymore: compliance. Responding to an explicit request from someone else. Eg. agreeing to do someone a favor: obedience. Authority figure involved and sense of unequal power relationship so it implies a command, rather than a request as we see in compliance. Form lines at cinema or trying a drug because all your friends are: automatic mimicry. If someone coughs then many other people cough. Ideomotor action = merely thinking about a behavior makes its actual performance more likely. When someone in meeting rubs face, participants were more likely to rub face when they were responding. Mimicry stronger for people who want to associate themselves with that person. That person comes off more friendly and leads to good social interactions.
