Document Summary

The transfer of pollen from anther to stigma (pollination) with help of wind, water, insects, or humans, initiates formation of seed. After pollination the pollen germinates and grows down through the style into the ovary and fertilization occurs. The fertilized egg forms a mass of cells and develops into the embryo of the grass seed. The embryo develops into a mature turfgrass plant. The starchy endosperm fills the space between the embryo and seed coat and remains a mass of food cells that is used by the germinating seed for growth. The seed coat develops around the embryo and endosperm and develops into a young plant with a protective coat and stored food called a seed. After maturation the seed enters into a dormant period but resumption of activities is called germination but must have all below or will not germinate: sufficient supply of water, favorable temp, adequate supply of oxygen, light.
