Document Summary

7. 1 dna is the hereditary molecule of life. Hereditary material must be localized to the nucleus, present in a stable form, sufficiently complex to contain the genetic information required to direct everything, able to accurately replicate, mutable. Chromosomes contain dna: dna, proteins, rna, and carbohydrates are in chromosomes, all of these could be potential heritable units, people thought it was likely proteins because they are more complex than dna. A transformation factor responsible for heredity: g(cid:396)iffith"s mi(cid:272)e e(cid:454)pe(cid:396)i(cid:373)e(cid:374)ts looked at pneumonia in mice and found two strains; rough and smooth. He did four very important tests: he injected mice with the smooth strain; with the heat killed smooth strain; the rough strain; and the heat killed rough strain and heat killed smooth strain. The first had dead mice; the second and third had living; and the last had dead. This means that the s strain molecules transferred to the rough strain and caused it to kill the mouse.
