Carl jung (1875-1961) was very introverted and reflected on his own experiences from a young age. He led a solitary life and had few friends and had an absent mother. Jung hated school and he developed a hysterical illness that prevented him from going to school. He realized he was doing harm to his family with this hysteria. Interested in religion and the occult, had a profound knowledge of the paranormal and believed it was real. Spent most of his professional life in zurich, switzerland. Jung started with eugen bleuler (worked as a psychiatry resident under bleuler) Bleuler: swiss psychiatrist, notable for contributions to understanding mental illness and for coining the term schizophrenia . Bleuler believed that mental processes could be unconscious. Developed word association technique attempt to integrate freud"s theory of repression with empirical psychology. Jung helped patients gain insight into their own psyche using this technique.
