PSY 181 Chapter Notes - Chapter 0: Collective Unconscious, Deflation, Psychological Types
Document Summary
There is a limited amount of psychic energy. The libido represents psychic energy in general (in contrast to freud"s view of the libido as energy drawn from the id). Jung believes the libido encompasses all psychic energy that is invested in some object. Value: any object toward which we channel psychic energy. Canalization: the process of moving energy from the libido to other activities. Inflation: an investment of psychic energy, occurs when libido flows toward a particular object. Deflation: de-investment of psychic energy, removal of psychic energy from a particular value. Psychological health involves a dynamic equilibrium of energy transfer. We are most healthy when we channel energy to various objects in the environment and when we channel energy to various archetypes contained in the collective unconscious. Dynamic equilibrium achieved through the dynamic inflation and deflation of our personality. It allows us to contact all of our archetypes.
