Document Summary
Community composition and structure changes in response to abiotic and biotic conditions. A disturbance is any strong, short-lived disruption to a community that changes the distribution of living and/or nonliving resources. Disturbances alter light levels, nutrients, unoccupied space, or another aspect of resource availability. Impact of disturbance is a function of three factors: The disturbance regime is the characteristic disturbances that affect a given ecological community. Severity and frequency are inversely related; the more frequent a disturbance is, the less severe it is and vice versa. The recovery following a disturbance is called succession. Primary succession: when a disturbance removes the soils and its organisms as well as organisms that live above the soil surface. Secondary succession: when a disturbance removes some or all of the organisms form an area but leaves the soil intact, including the seeds and microorganisms.
