PHIL 100 Chapter Notes - Chapter 4: Judith Jarvis Thomson, Fetus, Egg Cell
Document Summary
Example of the famous violinist, for whom you are kidnapped to save his life. I think this analogy is not the best. The violinist, one could say, has no right to use you as a means to save his life. A child in the womb is not an intruder, it is in the right place at the right time, that is, it is in the place it should be for the stage of human development he/she is in. There is no other place in which he can be in. According to my beliefs, the child has every right to be in the womb of the mother. An acorn isn"t a tree, it is an acorn. Although she doesn"t discuss this the value of a human life is not comparable to the value of the life of an acorn, so this comparison is not valid for me. A sperm + ovum creates a unique human entity from the moment they unite.
