Document Summary
Memory: nervous system"s capacity to acquire and retain information and skills. Three processing phases of memory: (1) encoding - brain changes information. Ex: what you see on the page when reading turns into meaningful neural code that the brain can use (2) storage - how you maintain the coded representation in a network of neurons in the brain. Storage can last a fraction of a second or as long as a lifetime (3) retrieval - re-accessing the information, bringing to your mind a previously encoded and stored memory when it is needed. Main issue with people not remembering things has to do with whether or not they pat attention. Attention - focusing mental resources on information; allows further processing for perception, memory, and response. Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (adhd) - extreme case of inattentiveness. Limited: hard to pay attention to two details vs. one. Some important information is attended to: to be important, information has to be personally relevant.
