Document Summary

The process of self disclosure is a deliberate set of actions providing information about oneself or others that others are unlikely to discover without assistance. When someone is disclosing something, it happens through many different modes: facts, opinions, feelings, actions or metacommunicative discourse. This means that most self disclosure is something that someone chooses to do it themselves. But during some situations, people may accidentally self disclose by different circumstances, like social media posts and text messages. When self disclosure occurs, it changes the relationship between two people either deepening or shallowing the relationship because of the information that is brought forward. Self disclosure is something that inhibit some people, because they are unsure of who to trust, thus decreasing the likelihood that they are an open person about issues. Self disclosure occurs for catharsis, reciprocity, self-clarification, self- validation, identity management or social control.
