COMM 2023 Chapter Notes - Chapter 9: Uncertainty Reduction Theory, University Of Cape Town
Document Summary
Uncertainty reduction theory occurs with all relationships, but most often in relationships early on within their establishment. The use of universal truths establishes the different relationships between different methods of communication and the uncertainty created by the different disclosures. Urt was intended to be able to see and evaluate the verbal, as well as nonverbal layers of communication. The theory posits that because of the discomfort that uncertainty produces, people are actively working to decrease the discomfort by avoiding or decreasing the amount of uncertainty in the relationship. The steps follow, mildly, disrupt the natural flow of a conversation, because it argues functionally that all early interaction begins with basic information and then leads to the exit where there are future plans established. They, also, then follow, that people have to work for a long time to gain enough information into the personal stage.
