CMN 105 Chapter Notes - Chapter 4: Motivation, Microsoft Onenote, Lexical Item
Document Summary
The organizaion of social or communicaive acions into pairs, or sequences, or whatever, depends on some way of changing or alternaing speakers. Some turn organizing systems, however, operate to allow all paricipants to take their turns at the same ime, as happens when all guests at a dinner party begin to eat when the host does. Single sequenial turns are important in conversaion because human beings" capacity to monitor several diferent spoken messages at once is limited and because some messages are responses to others and must occur later. Turns are constructed out of any of four diferent-sized units of talk: single lexical item, phrase, clause, full sentences. Transiion relevance place- place where a transiion from one speaker to another becomes relevant. If a paricipant does not successfully self-select for the next-turn, then whoever does become next speaker may select someone else as the following speaker, that person may select sill another paricipant, and so on.
