Document Summary

Autonomic nervous system - out of our control. Biofeedback - learning to alter automatic function consciously. Activates during emergencies or what you think are emergencies. Epinephrine secreted from adrenal glands (located above kidneys) Norepinephrine is secreted from all other sympathetic nerve endings. System promotes growth, energy storage, & other optimistic processes. Pituitary gland involved w/ hormones and other glands. Brain in control of pituitary gland (brain gives the orders) Hypothalamus (located at base of brain) contains many releasing & inhibiting hormones. Brain can experience or think of something stressful & activate components of the stress. Glucocorticoids back this activity up over the course of minutes or hours. It triggers the pituitary to release the hormone acth (aka corticotropin) When acth reaches adrenal gland, within a few minutes, it triggers glucocorticoid release. Glucocorticoid & the secretions of the sympathetic nervous system (epinephrine. & norepinephrine) account for large percentage of what happens in body during stress.
