122 views6 pages

Document Summary

Case study: trying to save a small owl from extinction. A plan in washington stopped the timber industry from clear-cutting the forests. This caused a loss of about 30,000 jobs. The purpose of the northwest forest plan was to preserve the spotted owl which had recently been put on the endangered species list. The owl was believed to live in the old-growth (forests that have never been cut and consist of large trees). This raised many questions as to whether or not the costs of restoration and preservation were worth it. Maximum sustainable yield: the largest harvest that a resource is able to replace. Today, firewood only provides 2% of commercial energy use in developed countries, it accounts for 15% of use in third world countries. 2/3 of wood is produced to be used as firewood. Pinchot was the head of the first head of the first school of forestry at yale university.
