Document Summary
Genetic diversity: total genetic information contained within all individuals of population, species, or group of species; measured as number and relative frequency of all genes present in a group. Ability to sequence entire genome of multiple members of same species. Research protocol called environmental sequencing: sequence all of most of genes present in a sample from soil or water present in habitat -- way to document genetic diversity even if the species present are unknown. Communities dominated by few species are high in species richness but low in species diversity. Bar coding: use of well-characterized gene sequence to identify distinct species, using the phylogenetic species concept. Some species occur in lineages that are extremely species rich -- taxonomic diversity. Ecosystem diversity: measure of varying community species within trophic levels and interactions with nonliving environment. Ecosystem function: sum of biological and chemical processes that are characteristic of a given ecosystem.
