Map distances +w = + is wildtype for the yellow gene and w is the mutant type for the white gene The bar in the middle separates the genotype of the two chromosomes Parents are the true breeding populations Parent can only contribute mutant allele of the gene F1 – has to be heterozygous Trans – wildtype and mutant alleles aren’t together and are combined together Cis – wildtype and mutatnt alleles are together Drosophila males: no recombination during meiosis • Remember from earlier: 1 centimorgan (=cM) = 1 map unit (mu): half the frequency of crossovers between the two genes • Do we know the crossover frequency? • Given by recombination frequency, if multiple crossovers occur at a negligible frequency • This ONLY works if the genes are close together, i.e. if the recombination frequency is small • Take the two most frequent genotypes; they are the parental types • If all are equally frequent, the genes are not linked: either not on the same chromosome, or far apart on the same chromosome
